Annotating with Post-its

  • Unfortunately, you cannot write in (and annotate) your copies of the book, so we are going to do the next best thing---write on post-its!!!  For each section of reading, you need to use at least 3 post-its.  Each post-it should have writing on it, and that writing should give me some insight into your thoughts while you were reading.
  • For example, you can:
    •  write comments (about interesting characters, patterns, or events; things you notice that seem to stick out)
    • write questions (words/events that are confusing, questions you would like to discuss in class)
    • make connections between the book and other literature or your own life
    • make connections between events in the book (this will happen more as you get further into the book!)
  • Do not feel as though your comments/questions have to be “right”; rather, you should aim to show me what you are thinking, but, as always, aim to be insightful.  If you notice something interesting, take note of it! Even if you think something is interesting and it later turns out not to be what you predicted, that is okay… the process of actively reading is what is most important.  Plus, the post-its will help you with discussion, so make sure you are keeping up with them!
